Russia should legally limit IT giants’ ways to manipulate opinion

MOSCOW, Dec 23 (PRIME) -- Russia should update its law on activities of transnational IT companies to limit opportunities to manipulate the public opinion, the state sovereignty protection committee of the parliament’s upper house Federation Council said in an annual report on Friday.

“Seriousness of the current challenges and problems related to a soaring advancement of digital technologies, real influence of international IT giants, social networks on perception of public events with multiple attempts to exploit the cyberspace in a destructive manner requires a due proper reaction,” the committee’s head Andrei Klimov said when presenting the document.

The house also underlined that Russia, one of few countries with own IT infrastructure, has not created national media platforms, alternative to Google and Meta with Facebook, the last two are designated as extremist and banned in the country.
